News That Matters

With summer here, you may be wondering how much and what type of sunscreen you should be using… 🤔 ☀️

It’s been previously reported that an SPF 30–50 is your best bet in terms of which to buy, but it’s how you apply that matters most. Doctors measure the amount you need to use in teaspoons, and they say it takes at least six full teaspoons to cover the entire body. They break it down like this:

“Areas such as the sides of the neck, temples, and ears are commonly missed, so take extra care and apply liberally.”

Drake is proving that there is definitely money in streaming.

So far, the rapper has earned more than $100 million on Apple Music and Spotify alone, which at an average rate of $0.005 per stream is quite an accomplishment.

Spotify also reported that it has paid out more than €8 billion in its lifetime to music rights-holders around the globe.

Technology hardware that gets thrown away makes up ~2% of trash in all landfills, but it also represents 70% of all hazardous waste.

Instead of tossing those old iPhones, alarm clocks, and printers into the trash, did you know you can turn them in at a local electronics recycling facility? If you’re in the Bay Area like us, this will give you one more excuse to stop by the famous Fry’s Electronics.

Tech Trends

Steve Jobs always seemed to be ahead of the curve, and a newly-released interviewwith the Apple founder proves that truth once again.

In 2008, Jobs called in a reporter to talk about how well his brand new App Store was doing and how he thought apps would be the future of mobile. Back then, just three months into existence, the app store had paid out $21 million to developers. Ten years later, that number is up past $30 billion.

“We didn’t expect it to be this big. The mobile industry’s never seen anything like this. To be honest, neither has the computer industry. [laughs] Sixty million downloaded applications in the first 30 days. Thirty percent as big as iTunes song downloads during the last 30 days — this is off the charts. … It’s taking the iPhone into a territory that most mobile devices have never gone into before. I think that the developers are sensing something really different here than has ever existed.” — Jobs in 2008

Marketing Trends

Google’s parent company, Alphabet, has nearly reached a $1 trillion market cap after reporting all-time highs in their earnings report.

The surge in earnings comes mainly from ad revenue, which rose 25% for the quarter to more than $28 billion.

“Research firm eMarketer estimates Google will control 31 percent of the digital ad market this year. On the company’s conference call, CFO Ruth Porat said, ‘One of the biggest opportunities for investment continues to be our ads business, where we’re continuing to invest meaningfully.’”

Education Trends

As technology continues to advance, automation threatens to eliminate jobs. To combat this, governors of every state are trying to find ways to prepare the upcoming labor force for a new type of job market — and that includes finding new ways to educate those coming up.

In conjunction with various universities, governors are helping to implement programs that could help those who will be working different types of jobs than any of us are used to.

“This summer, Purdue University also debuted Purdue Global, an online school aimed primarily at those 36 million adults who started but never finished college.

In Colorado, an organization called Skillful started with the goal of building a skills-based labor market, providing more transparency around the value of education and training programs.

This February, governors from 20 states, including Indiana and Virginia, joined together to form the Skillful State Network — demonstrating a shared commitment to help their states’ workers and businesses succeed in a changing economy. Efforts like these help students, workers and businesses keep pace with the changes in the economy, allowing states to build a skilled workforce.”

Innovations like these will continue to crop up in the future as schools and universities do their best to remain useful institutions.
