News That Matters

We need sanitizer for our sanitizer. 😷

According to a new study, certain strains of bacteria have begun adjusting to the alcohol found in most common hand sanitizers, and many of the same bacteria have also been found to be drug-resistant. The most common strain of this bacteria, enterococci, is actually most often found in hospitals. And although increasing the alcohol content has been effective in eventually killing enterococci, the best remedy is simple soap and water.

Health-care institutions trying to control the spread of these infections will need to “adhere rigorously to hand-hygiene protocols,” says Timothy Stinear, a coauthor of the study and a researcher at the University of Melbourne’s Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity, — and probably institute additional measures to stop the spread, such as increased hand-washing with soap after coming into contact with the bacteria.

When going through funding rounds, a new study showed that women receive on average $1 million less than their male counterparts, but, women provide a greater return on the dollar: per dollar of funding, the women-led startups generated 78 cents, while male-founded startups generated 31 cents.

“Women-owned companies only receive a small slice of total venture capital funding. But what is surprising is how much more effective women-owned businesses are at turning a dollar of funding into a dollar of revenue — they generate better returns, and are ultimately a better bet. We hope that this research forms part of the case for change.” — Katie Abouzahr, lead author of the study

Through controlled testing, gender was confirmed as a main factor in how/why VCs invested in certain companies, advancing the argument that diversity is a problem in the startup economy. With this new information, though, perhaps VCs will be more willing to take a risk on women-fronted ventures.

If you are looking to move to an area where people value free time, moving to Maine, Wisconsin, Alaska, Michigan, or Utah might be your best bet.

Coleman Furniture conducted a study to determine which states offered the most free time, and those were the top five. At the bottom of the list were Virginia, Maryland, New Hampshire, Texas, and Mississippi.

The study also found that job love is a key factor in an employee’s stress level, and one of the greatest determining factors in job love happened to be commute time. It’s no surprise, then, that states with shorter average commute times show benefits elsewhere, too: They see more job love, spend significantly lower portions of income on housing, have less unemployment, and have higher rates of community well-being.

Last week, NASA announced the nine astronauts who will be piloting spacecrafts from SpaceX and Boeing in the coming months. When they do, they will become the first astronauts to launch from United States soil since 2011, and even more incredible is that they will be doing it for a private space flight organization.

Prior to ending the shuttle program in 2011, NASA offered up a contest to see which private company would be able to manufacture the best space taxi for traveling to and from the International Space Station. Over the next few months, SpaceX and Boeing will participate in manned and unmanned tests of their respective shuttles. If successful, they can be approved for regular trips to and from ISS. 🚀 🚀

In a unique partnership, Sonos linked up with Nasdaq to reimagine the sound of the famous Nasdaq bell. The project was a celebration of Sonos going public.

The new bell is a reflection of how Nasdaq sees the world differently, the sense of achievement their guests feel when ringing the bell, and a signal of the trading day through this iconic sound. It celebrates Sonos becoming a public company. It tells the world that we take sound seriously and deeply value the listening experience. Most of all, it represents both companies’ vision for continued, relentless pursuit of what’s possible.

Education Trends

As computers become more intelligent and automation spreads to more industries, creating a positive relationship between humans and technology is becoming increasingly important.

At the USC Institute for Creative Technologies, a program called MxR explores that relationship and provides students with strategies to improve the fluency of human-computer interactions and create visceral synthetic experiences.

Through immersive programs, simulations, and fostering creativity, USC is pushing its students to test the boundaries of what is possible so that the future will be even more exciting than we can imagine. 🤗

If you are looking for a different take on a classic, check out Recomposed By Max Richter: Vivaldi, The Four Seasons. 🎶

The album is a complete recomposition and reinterpretation of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons.

Although Richter said that he had discarded 75% of Vivaldi’s original material, the parts he does use are phased and looped, emphasizing his grounding in postmodern and minimalist music.
