Four Cult-ural Trends You (Might) Have to Fight

Episode 14 of The Mission Daily

Why is the world the way it is? Is society healthy? Or has our modern culture become… a cult?

In this episode, we do a deep dive into one of the most important parts of Zero to One that we haven’t heard anyone cover.

“So why is progress slowing and why don’t people believe in secrets? Along with the natural fact that physical frontiers have receded, four social trends have conspired to root out belief in secrets.” — Peter Thiel, author of Zero to One.

By learning about these four cult-ural trends and pressures, you’ll be able to spot them and stop them from sabotaging your progress (and the progress of those you care about).

The Sixth Principle of Accelerated Learning: Skills

In Episode 6 of The Mission Daily, we dive into the three skills that (almost?!) nobody wants to master.

Investigating, exploring, and mastering these skills requires EGO destruction and reconstruction, and it will expose you to many of your worst fears.

These are the trinity of skills. If you decide to really learn and improve them, they make every other principle of accelerated learning much easier.

News That Matters

Take this newsletter outside, please!

In a new study, a quarter of Americans reported that they spend 21 to 24 hours indoors daily and another 20 percent said they spend 19 to 20 inside.

For a lot of reasons, that amount of time indoors is not good for your health. Most of people’s reported inside activity requires screen time either in front of computers or TVs — sedentary activities that cause atrophy in the human body. Plus, the lack of exposure to the outdoors can lead to a Vitamin D deficiency and research has shown that breathing stale, recirculated air could actually be worse for you than breathing in outdoor air pollution.

Insider trading is currently illegal. But what if it wasn’t?

In a recent research article, two authors made the case for legalizing the practice:

“Whenever other informationally advantaged investors are absent or insignificant, insider trading increases trading losses to investors and liquidity traders and makes markets less liquid. Otherwise, insider trading, by increasing competition between informed investors, may assist investors and liquidity traders. Unless other informed agents are crowded out of the financial market, insider trading renders prices more informative, potentially increasing the efficiency of investment and capital budgeting decisions. Insider trading opportunities provide low cost, high-powered incentives for managerial performance. However, the incentives provided are imperfect for two reasons: insider trading encourages managers to undertake risky activities and investors to under-provide more traditional forms of compensation that may lead to increased managerial performance and reduced risk-taking.”

Did you know that 78% of women feel at least some pressure to never make mistakes or show weakness?

That is just one statistic that illustrates a self-esteem epidemic that has plagued women for centuries. But did you also know that self-esteem can be taught?

Self-Esteem Rising launched a nationwide campaign to raise awareness of the Beautiful Me programs, free self-esteem curriculums that are offered to females of all ages around the country.

Tech Trends

Space may be the final frontier, but there’s still plenty on Earth left to discover.

On a research mission to Bermuda, scientists found a previously undiscovered zone in the ocean and more than 100 new living species, including crustaceans and forms of algae.

“[This is] evidence of how little we know and how important it is to document this unknown frontier to ensure that its future is protected.” -Alex Rogers, Professor of Conservation Biology at Oxford University and one of the leaders of the expedition

YouTube Red might finally be cracking the streaming code.

According to last week’s analytics, Red’s original series, Cobra Kai, a spinoff of the Karate Kid franchise, outperformed all other streaming competitors, including heavy-hitters, Netflix and Hulu.

And Cobra Kai didn’t just outpace the competition, it outperformed anything Red has ever produced — by a lot.

But don’t count out Netflix just yet. The streaming service just announced a major increase in their original content budget for 2018 — to the tune of $8 billion — to stay ahead of companies such as Red and Disney, which is launching its own independent streaming service as well.
